Queen’s Head Askham

The Queen’s Head Askham is a pub and restaurant with six bedrooms. The building sits on a slope and is higher at the rear and lower at the front. The ground floor which consists of the bar, restaurant and two bedrooms has some steps so wheelchair access is not possible. The first floor has three bedrooms and can only be accessed by a narrow, fairly steep staircase. There is, however a fully disabled access bedroom at the rear of the building next to the car park, accessible from the exterior of the building.

  • Easy access by car, 6 miles and around 15 minutes from Penrith and junction 40 of the M6 and a short distance from the A6.
  • Local taxis available including special adapted disabled vehicles.

Arrival and car parking facilities

  • Car park to the rear of the property.
  • Car park level, with good illumination.
  • To access the main building from the car park (via the rear entrance) there are two sets of stairs. Alternatively you may turn left out of the car park and walk around the property to the main entrance (see main entrance access details below).
  • Disabled access car park area outside the accessible bedroom.

Main entrance, reception and ticketing area

  • Main entrance is at the front of the property so it’s necessary to walk a short distance around the property on the pavement and down a slight hill to enter.
  • There is a car park drop off area in front of the property however parking in front of the property is limited.
  • The main entrance is of a standard width with one step down, a right turn and then one step up, not suitable for wheelchair access.
  • Reception is in the restaurant, past the bar.
  • There are no steps in the bar and restaurant area once you are inside the property.
  • Main entrance clearly illuminated at night.

Public areas – hall, stairs, landing, corridors etc

  • The bar area is in front directly upon entering the premises.
  • Continuing straight on through a doorway to the left of the bar is the restaurant.
  • To the left of the main entrance is the access to the first floor, via a carpeted, fairly narrow and steep stair
  • The toilets are to the left between the bar and the restaurant.
  • In front of the main entrance is an outdoor seating area, on the ground floor with no step access for summer use only.

Public areas – sitting room, lounges, lobbies etc

  • There is no lift.
  • There are just two floors, the ground floor where the bar, restaurant and two bedrooms are and the first floor where there are three more bedrooms. The sixth bedroom is to the rear of the property and accessible from the car park only.
  • There are baby changing facilities in the toilets.
  • The toilet entrances are not suitable for wheelchairs, however there is a fully accessible bathroom in room 6.

Bedrooms

  • Bedrooms 1 and 2 are located on the ground floor, past the toilets. Both of the ground floor bedrooms are accessible via a step. Room 1 has a step down and room 2 a step up. Room 2 has a separate bunk bed annex for children, on the same level as the main room. These bedrooms are accessible after restaurant closing hours via the back entrance / carpark, via two set of stairs.
  • Bedrooms 3, 4 and 5 are upstairs and accessible via a fairly narrow steep staircase. These bedrooms are only accessible via the main front entrance, not the rear entrance.
  • Room 4 has a separate twin bed annex area for children, accessible by three steps.
  • Only room 6 is fully accessible consisting of low twin beds and a spacious wet room shower room suitable for wheelchair use. This bedroom is accessible from the car park without steps. Please bear in mind that the rest of the pub is NOT accessible.

Additional information

  • The evacuation point in the event of a fire is the middle of the rear car park.
  • Dogs are allowed throughout the property.
  • Fridges are available upon request for the storage of medicines etc.
